Jousting in the SCA requires special authorization and equipment. Eye and poll protection for mounts are recommended. The SCA offers two levels of jousting: Styrofoam composite lance and balsa jousting. Beginners start with Styrofoam-tipped lances that easily break on impact before having the option to apply and train for the balsa wood program. The composite lances are highly recommended for learning technique and determining if the person really loves jousting before spending the additional money on the higher armor requirements for balsa.
